Dear Readers,
Indian meat industry plays very important role in providing nutritional security to ever growing population, livelihood support to rural masses and creating employment opportunities for youth. India produced 7 million tonnes of meat in 2015 -16. Poultry, buffalo, goat, sheep, pig and cattle contributed 46, 23, 13, 7, 5.5 and 5 % to the total meat production. In the same period, about 1.33 million tonnes of meat worth Rs 27,519 crore was exported from the country. Meat industry needs to aim high to grow at rapid rate to meet ever raising demand in domestic market and to tap the export potential. While doing so, industry must be sensitive to sensibilities attached to different meat animals owing to cultural heritage of the country.
